It's still part of the UK. Actually, I was there after the border change. The UK removed passport requirements and the border because a majority of workers in gibraltar are Spaniards and, among other things, the queue for entry into gibraltar was hours long each morning for workers from the town over and gibraltar relies entirely on spanish goods to exist (there is almost nothing there to export and no farmland whatsoever).
But, even though there's no border, it's still very much part of the UK. There are a lot of practical reasons for doing this and it really wasn't a bad idea, shockingly for either of the 2 disastrous governments. The UK however now does a passport check on people traveling from gibraltar, because gibraltar is now Schengen. That's the only major difference. Oh, and the opposite is also true. British travelers to the gibraltar airport need to present passports now, because it's part of schengen. Everything else is still British though and the spanish government has 0 jurisdiction over gibraltar. It's just easier for Spaniards to enter gibraltar now than it is for British people, because the entire peninsula relies on the spanish for its economy and food supply and not British people (from outside gibraltar). It also makes it easier for gibraltarians to not be stuck on a tiny rock.
This famously cannot happen with ceuta because the Moroccan government will send 500 trillion monkeys from hell to occupy it the moment the border isn't guarded by armed soldiers, they already do it with a heavily guarded border. Meanwhile, 2 white countries that have historically hated each other collaborated on gibraltar shockingly civilly for 300 years because the alternative was effectively annihilating the population of gibraltar. Even more surprisingly, Britain didn't even take gibraltar for themselves. They took it for the habsburgs, but that check bounced and spain ended up under the control of the bourbons, so britain seized gibraltar. Quite honorable of them, really, considering that habsburg spain was *the* original enemy of the British empire, that they would hold on to a strip of land and fly the cross of burgundy until the hasburgs in spain were no more. At any point they could have just taken it for themselves, spain was much weaker than Britain in 1704, but they didn't until there wasn't any point not to.
