At one time, British currency was so debased it was almost worthless. Isaac Newton accepted the role of Treasurer for the crown and implemented ridges on the currency. He also increased the silver content. It literally saved the British economy.

At the time, coin clipping was punishable by death, which considering the consequences was not a disproportionate punishment, and one that should always remain in effect.
