I think they chose Louis renault specifically because he was the face of French industry and was one of the major reasons that france held out in the first world War. His company built the first effective modern tank and many other revolutionary vehicles both military and civilian. He was under fire, they turned a man as popular as him into the 2nd most hated man in france (after petain, who himself wasnt much of a friend of hitler either) on false charges of collaboration to make an example out of him.

Renault was against the germans. Most old French people were, even petain was against the germans. Why? Because they're german, and to the French, the germans had been the enemy for decades. Simple prejudice. The argument that renault made was that he believed that his employees would be deported back to germany and enslaved. Seems reasonable enough for an old Frenchman who had already fought against Germany to believe in legitimately. Renault did not collaborate until Vichy, renault was actively trying to get resources to fight the germans.
So you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. What the hell are you supposed to even do in this situation? Suicidal idealism? Was he supposed to, in his mind, get all of his employees killed or enslaved to prove a point? There's also the fact that renault let his employees sabotage german military vehicles with faulty equipment, but it still somehow wasn't enough to prove his innocence of not being a full on collaborator.

There's more to zhukov though that adds to this. Zhukov was under the tutelage of a very peculiar and odd red army armored commander named tukhachevsky. Tukhachevsky had... extremely unorthodox views on what bolshevism meant, but he was so damned good at his job that he couldn't be purged during the Civil war. He would get purged later though and replaced with the retard budyonny. Tukhachevsky more or less viewed bolshevism as a way to free Russia from judaism and reinstate Slavic paganism, and that karl marx was an avatar of the war God perun. He was the red army's equally out of his fucking mind answer to Baron Sternberg. Extremely counterintuitive? Yes. Schizophrenic as fuck? Yes. *Subversive* to the bolsheviks? Also yes. I'm not saying that zhukov subscribed to tukhachevsky's batshit insane political theories, but he *was* an impressionable student under his direction. So who's to say that he wasn't? It definitely wouldn't go over well if the 2nd most powerful man in the country was subscribed to the theories of Tukhachevsky.
