That's the power of multiple generations of propaganda. I suspect a lot of guys can't see through the easily debunked studies claiming it's healthy because they whould have to acknowledge the fact that their parents did something terrible to them, that their father, grandfather, and great-grandfather all were duped.

Boomers lean into it hard, but it's sadly human nature in general that people want to believe they aren't gullible enough to be tricked. It's why scammers like bankers and political parties prosper, because it's easier to fool someone than to convince them they were fooled.

Isn't easy to set your pride aside and acknowledge an ugly truth. The fact that we live in a society that pushes pride as a virtue instead of a sin probably makes it even worse.
