The reason NJ is viewed as the "garbage state" or "the armpit of America" is actually symptomatic of the country's decline as a whole.
100 years ago NJ was truely "the garden state" with large amounts of farmland, woodland, and a 97% White population. The German American Bund had a huge presence prior to WWII. A lot of the pictures of "American Nazi Rallies" are actually from NJ.
Then NYC basically vomited all over it with nons, trash, warehouses and chemical olants. It didn't help that the (((New York media market))) constantly painted the state in a bad light. The 95 corridor is a hellscape. But elements of the old beauty persist in the northwest and south.
My godparents lived across the border from Philly and had a timeshare one block from the beach in Sea Isle City. I grew up going to the state every summer. I'm in my mid 40s now. That fatass governor Christie sure helped make every city like Camden.
