It's tragic, but the suicide at the end was the intent.
He knew he'd never achieve his dream of being a pilot because the (((system))) would never allow it, so he chose to take the bull by the horns and end it all on his terms living out his dream rather than being a baggage wagie forever or landing and getting sent to prison.
