This happened to my mom. She was a saver, she was able to save $400k or so by 2001. She could have bought 2-3 houses at the time with it, maybe even 4. She still has that $400k ish it's a bit higher... She never invested it or did anything with it other than let it gain interest in the bank which she lived off of. Now that $400k can't even buy half the cost of her current house. I believe the inflation numbers are far higher than we're even being told.
Thanks for sharing, I remember back in the day reading Robert Kiyosaki's Rich Dad Poor Dad and he talked exactly about this scenario, which is why it's important to invest.
Inflation is calculated a few ways, but the "core CPI" leaves out food and energy as they are "too volatile"...lmao. There are also "hedonic" adjustments. So a product might nominally cost 20% more in 2026 vs 2006, but hey it's got more pixels or whatever so it "better" amd therefore the actual price inflation was "really" only 5%...
All I know is that I make about double what I did 15 years ago, but maybe feel like 10% "richer" despite promotions and experience... My pay is up 200% but my groceries are 400%.
