'Reminds me of The Old Man and the Sea novel by Ernest Hemingway 1952... or perhaps To Have and Have Not (also by Hemingway). I read them both when I was young and I can't quite remember.
The main character is a sailor, classical masculine man with only one arm who is effectively a 1950s version of Marvel's Wolverine but with only the superpowers of a manly White male.
The novel has an entire chapter about the crew, all of who are either dead or shot because of their weapons trade.
The main character has been shot several times, but fulfills all roles of the entire crew to get everyone back to shore.
The final sentence of that chapter is something like, "All niggers are useless as soon as they get shot once" because some of the nigger crew only had flesh wounds but wouldn't stop rolling around in pain.
