If that happens, she needs to be killed brutally to set an example. However 1-4 years would be a brutal timeline... it means she is protected for 1-4 years, while other women can go crazy in the meantime.

I still think, while this obviously has negative consequences, it's less malicious intent by the NYT and more classic clickbait. Look at that fuckin headline - even I want to read the article to see how insane it is.
Media has done this all throughout history - get the eyeballs, and if society burns for it, so what? If it bleeds, it leads, etc.
I think you're right about the consequences, but I don't think there's a grand conspiracy here. I think women have always been, by and large, gullible fools who are easily swayed by the whims and winds of the Zeitgeist, and this can easily be explained by the nature of the media coupled with the nature of women.
I'm not saying there isn't malicious intent, but I'm saying I'm not quick to ascribe to malice what can be sufficiently explained through the nature of the components involved (in this case, the media and women).
The conclusion is the same though - she needs to be brutally executed, publicly, such that the media will then report on that, and women will be forced to take note. Maybe be a little less crazy since they don't have that crutch to fall back on.
