We're still on the cusp of people realizing some of the ethnic-racial alignment with political / religious views:

Majority of Jews / muslims being libs (Jew / arab, and probably most minorities), majority of white Christians being the "Republicans"

Properly the conflict is religious although there is significant cultural overlap with demographic groups

Correct. Christ's enemies have been hiding under layers of false identities and ideologies, but truly, ultimately, the conflict is religious.
