The middle class in (north) America exploded, and that was by virtue of the rest of the world being completely destroyed. The prosperity achieved is truly a historical anomaly.
In many ways we're just reverting back to the norm that was for every common man.
There's nothing to reminisce about from roman times or vikings etc. All the stories you hear are about the elites, or other exceptional individuals.
And those elites today would, and do say, that we are in a Golden Age.
