Except, it always was exceptional and still is. Hardly anyone was educated in the 1800s because hardly anyone is exceptional.

Basic education used to be far more rigorous, at least in the classical basics and literature. We're reading classical fairy tales to pur kids, and one of the sources we're using is Andrew Lang's color Fairy Books. The vocabulary and complexity in popular childrens books from 1890 are more difficult and rich than most adult books today. Not everyone back then hada degree, but that doesn't mean they weren't exposed to culuture.

The reality is you cannot teach intelligence. 80% of the people in education do not need an education and our society shouldn't be wasting time giving them one.
