Sounds like Mom wasn't happy with her daughter's taste in men. Right intuition, but too scared to truly do anything about it. Lest she be racist!
Daughter should have been locked out and Mom should have been armed. Meanwhile, Dad's down in the basement watching TV after midnight. Sad.
