The shoes are actually on top of a slanted piece of ply wood made to look like the room is full of shoes, but it's not as many shoes to fill a room.

Uh.....okay..... but why would the Nazis keep all these valuables in a flimsy wooden drawer? Why not just melt the gold down? Why didn't the guards take this drawer of incredibly valuable treasure when they fled the camp?
