Hindus and Kabbalah followers usually wear it for the same reason--to ward off the "Evil Eye". Apparently, the jealous eye can bring misfortune. Hindus may wrap it multiple times around the wrist, usually 3, 5, or 7 times.
A lot of celebrities have been seen wearing one. But, some of them may be practicing Hinduism or may be dabbling in it. So, one can't always assume that the wearer is some kind of crypto-jew.
