Bolívar was an ethnic spaniard who fanboyed the American revolution too much, and attempted to create a gigantic south american state (much larger than the US at the time) on the same principals as the US. He had a genuinely noble cause but his movement collapsed on itself because of sectarian infighting and really bad geography. The US also had sectarian infighting, but its relatively moderate geography meant that rebellions could be quelled. Shays rebellion would be a much bigger deal if the US had the Amazon rainforest, gran colombia had a *lot* of Shays rebellions.

 For a weak post-independence state to project power across such an enormous amount of extreme geography in the early 1800s was just about damn near impossible. But it does beg the question of if there would be a legitimate counterweight to American jewry in the americas if gran colombia had actually succeeded, combined with a brazil that had remained stable like it was under monarchy.
