Ernest Shackleton was a born explorer. His biography describes him as being restless and unsatisfied when he wasn't out on some new expedition. He's not the most famous explorer, but he brought his men back from the brink of disaster, and that's worth celebrating.

He aborted ALL his expeditions. But he never lost a single man. There's a story of how he kept a cracker all throughout 1 expedition. Everyone on the verge of starvation - he gives the cracker to the youngest member of the expedition. It was just 1 simple cracker - but to that boy it meant the world.

The sad thing about Scott is he never even wanted to go to the South Pole. The financiers made it a stipulation so they could use it for headlines.
