I did in the mid-90s when our family pooled our money together to buy a Pentium Pro. Yes, we all had to pitch in our savings, around $500 each, and we all had to agree on it. Of course the 3 children did. But I was the only one to pay my own money to upgrade it. Had to get that 3dfx graphics card! And the USB card. And the ZIP100 drive. And a 10GB PATA EIDE HDD.

That was harder to do in the 90s. No BitTorrent.

No way my parents would have allowed that. And the pretext for the computer was primarily for homework. But also I had always had an interest in computers, and would spend as many study halls as possible in the computer lab, and was taking the only programming course offered (Turbo Pascal). Eventually two of the other lab assistants and I discussed forming a computer club, and one of my best friends and 2 of the juniors who were also lab assistants successfully proposed it to the student body. We eventually got a grant to put a couple computers in the library, convert one of the typing labs into computers, and put mini-labs in the English classrooms for essays, then helped wire all the CAT cables to the Novell network. Good times. Got to get out of class to do it, but I always started my Algebra I/II homework in class while sitting in the back and listening to my Discman. That nerdy young attractive female teacher knew I was reading ahead anyway, so it was OK if I missed a few classes.

I remember those days. My dad surprised me with a top of the line compaq presario back then from circuit city. The only reason he was able to get it was because they offered him a year or two(can’t remember) with 0% financing. He got it my 7th grade year, and told me it was my birthday, and Christmas gifts for the next few years. He really wanted me to have it for my high-school years.

I’m pretty sure that’s the one.

I sold those at Staples in high school.

We got a custom built PC. It was less expensive and made sure it could be upgraded. I built an Athlon with a Radeon All in Wonder video capture card and Creative adio caoture for college because I used to do AV work for bands at local concerts and put their videos on their websites which I often created as well.

That’s pretty fucking awesome. Ever got to go backstage to meet any bands that “made it”?

No, but I did get my friends and I on the tour buses at Warped Tour one year. Save Ferris, Green Day, I gambled with Fat Mike from NOFX...
