He lost because he misjudged Britain and France's willingness to defend Poland and Britain's willingness to continue fighting when France was defeated and/or Britain and France misjudged how going to war for Poland, and for Britain, staying in the war after France was defeated, was ultimately detrimental to their longterm geopolitical goals. The way the rest of WWII played out was a lot of very simple cause and effect, which didn't really hinge on small personal decisions. But Hitler SHOULD have at least considered that Britain and France would declare war over his invasion of Poland, and Britain and France SHOULD have either not declared war or sued for peace early. In our timeline, neither of these things happened, which meant that the Reich ended up in an unwinnable war against the Brits, French resistance, Soviets, and Americans. As soon as the Reich invaded Poland without a serious expectation of a longterm war in the west, the war was already lost. Churchill was willing to be a stubborn bastard and Hitler was apparently unaware of this.
