It's only mildly abstract thought that is still, for whatever reason, completely lost on so many Leftists and I just can't for the life of me understand it.

I think their need for social acceptance overpowers it until they are forced to face it in reality. I've heard a lot of people spout how "black doctors are just as qualified as Whites" until they realize that THEIR doctor/surgeon is one of their virtue manifested golems.
