The sad truth is that you cannot shot a person in the leg, even if doing so could save their life, not even if the only other option is to kill them. If you do, you'll be destroyed in civil court for injuring a man who, as the lawyers will surely argue, didn't "need" to be shot, as if he DID need to be then you would have, and should have, shot to kill.
Yes I know it's insane that we've collectively decided that killing a man is better then wounding him, but that's the result of shit eating lawyers on our collective decision making process.
For the record I think it should be perfectly legal and acceptable to chose to leg shoot a man who's clearly trying to commit suicide by cop, and I would see any civil suit after the fact promptly tossed out, provided of course that the shooter was clearly given no other alternative but to kill them, as here.
If the lawyers then counter argued that the leg shot was in fact not justified, as the officer could have left, well *snicker*, then I'd opt to have the the lawyers tossed into shark infested waters while dressed in a raw meat suit.
I believe that would solve any remaining issues to everyone's satisfaction.
