I don't remember the specifics, take it with a grain of salt, but I've read that the communist guy in this picture was actually not much of a communist. He favored socialist economics but was strongly nationalist and wanted to remove american influence from Japan. Meanwhile the student was just a liberal. Again, I don't know for sure.

Fascinating, I never knew this... and in fact didn't know much about it anyway, except the surface level messaging. So basically we have been duped about that incident, and it was a leftist-communist who killed someone who was nationalistic. And the reason wasn't to protect Japan from communism, but to go after nationalists.
This reminds of the Dunning-Kruger effect. I too though for quite some years that it's some valid study, but I stumbled upon someone criticizing it, and then looked into it. It turned out to be true, it is indeed an irreproducible study from psychology "professors", and their study was based on their students marks and their expectations. Fucking marks. And not only that, it has a massive mathematical flaw that naturally causes the "mount stupid" graph. So I do the same as that guy, I mention it sometimes, it's like a penance.
Asanuma (the stabbed man) was a hero who was slandered during and after his life *constantly* . The most communist thing he did was suggest an alliance with mao after the sino-soviet split, but really this was just the only option that there was for an independent japan. But I don't know why people expect the 3rd position to be as politically blind as possible and continue to identify themselves as fascists immediately after ww2. It's stupid.
