Smith became the first United States citizen to cross the Mojave Desert into what is now the state of California.
2. On the way back, Smith and his boys were also the first U.S. citizens to explore and cross the Sierra Nevada as well as the Great Basin Desert.
3. Later, Smith and his band were the first U.S. explorers to travel north from California overland to the Oregon Country.
