I agree with preserving the dash now that you've pointed it out. Read as 'melon-ated' rather than 'melonated', it has a double meaning, i.e. referring both to melanin and to eating melon, whereas 'melonated' might obscure the second meaning.
I actually like the term enough that I'll probably start using it on X/Twitter. Thankfully, I see enough about posts about malevolent maniacal mendacious marauding murderous melon-ated mutant mud mutt micro-minded mental-midget monkey menaces that it won't be long before I find the right opportunity.
It makes sense for people to like what their ancestors ate. Melanated peoples mostly stem from tropical regions that bore high-alkaline fruits.
