A lot of Canadian west coast tribes (maybe also US) have an institution whereby someone who has been unusually successful in that year throws a massive feast for everyone else. There are gifts and dancing, the whole nine yards, and the host pays for everything, basically bankrupting himself in the act.
The reason for this is that they had no way to store wealth materially. Tools were made of wood, stone, and bone and didn't last. Food could not be stored longterm. No symbolic money. So they "stored" the wealth in the goodwill of the community.
That's what I think is happening here although, with niggers, relying on gratitude may be a bad decision...
