I grew up in the south where this behavior for those of us who lived outside of the major cities was practically mandated, but none of my family were ever taught it at school. Not even my grandfather. Maybe it was a northern thing to necessitate teaching it? I don't know, but the members of my family just passed it down to subsequent generations. It wasnt necessary to teach it. I kind of don't even necessarily fault the schools for not teaching it. It seems unnecessary and like a waste of time when you expect that parents will teach it anyways.
