How fucking pretentious of them. "Years Ago" works just fine, it just doesn't sound like the sort of soft language that humanities majors prefer to use. "mmmbout six thousand years ago or somethin" would do just fine, but no, these pretentious faggots have to mind-goon by saying "MMMMYEEESS T'WAS APPROXIMATELY SIX THOUSAND YEARS BEFORE PRESENT"

"Around 6000 years ago" doesn't sound unprofessional/redneckish nor pretentious, I don't know why wikipedia used "before present"
