Automatics with inherently worse fuel efficiency and higher maintenance cost overrode manuals in sales, and manuals are now more expensive in the states. Very recently automatics have been on par with manual transmissions, sure, but nobody can afford these anyways. I have a friend who has a manual Honda accord from 2005. Coincidentally, my mother has an automatic Honda accord from 2005. Same model. Same engines. Different transmissions. His gas mileage is far and above hers. They're accords, so they're rock hard, but if either one has a transmission failure, his is going to be pretty affordable to repair while she may as well get a new car at thar point.

SUVs and giant trucks with atrocious gas mileage were pushed by auto manufacturers and bypassed government "regulations" and now far exceed normal sized cars and normal sized trucks (which effectively no longer exist in america) in sales.

Cash4clunkers cannibalized most of the affordable used car market in the states. It's rare to see a car built before the 2000s on the road, even though they're very much still roadworthy.

Dieselgate happened. Diesel is the most effective fuel for long distance travel, especially for normal and small cars, and pays for itself with how efficient it is. Small Diesel cars now no longer exist in the US. The volkswagen TDI might be the best engine ever created, only followed closely by the citroen PSA XUD engine, but most Americans will never enjoy the benefits or long life of these engines because of dieselgate.

Propaganda against Diesel happened. Propaganda against ICEs in general followed suit. Now EVs, which have a battery shelf life of about 8 years (far under even the worst of internal combustion engines) are pushed to the mainstream.

Now gas prices are absurdly high.

Maybe they are trying to keep Americans locked down. It's hard to do anything without a car in america. Car prices themselves are now absurd. Now it's unaffordable to even drive one. I despise car centric culture, I think it's putrid and jewish, but the alternative is more insidious because it's designed that way on purpose.
