The biggest lie about north korea is that it's starving. It isn't and it hasn't been starving in over 20 years, by any metric. This is insidious not just because it's a lie but also because it's directly exploiting something that actually happened (because at one point NK was reliant on soviet food, no soviets meant no food) but this was effectively recovered from by agricultural reforms that fully took advantage of the little bit of arable land that NK has. The whole point of juche autarky is largely a lesson from that and making sure that it never happens again, which it likely will not, because the state run agricultural program has revamped its methods for food distribution.

If anyone thinks that agricultural autarky isn't important, southern italy had cyclical catastrophic famines (the reason why there are so many Sicilian descendants in the US) until mussolini made italy agriculturally independent in the 20s. North Korea would be pretty solid if there weren't 6 million trade embargoes against it. Plus, from what I understand, Kim Jong-un has implemented fascistic style economics in the country similar to china's, so it's doing much better in that regard than in the past. Unfortunately for north korea, its geography makes it impossible for it to truly thrive without trade. Can it function well? Yes, that's the point of juche, north korea is doing 1000x better than anyone else could in its circumstances, but it can never be at the top of QoL standards like neighboring china or pre-chaebol dominated south korea (modern day ROK is a depressing and burnt out dystopia) because of where it is on the planet. That being said, north korea is doing *extremely* well in spite of its circumstances thanks to juche.
