Honestly I don't see why people treat it as a gotcha to point out that evil people often don't face consequences in this life. That's not the fault of religious belief itself even if there are many today who use it as license for their own cowardice.

And there are two sides to that coin. When belief in heaven and hell was universally taken seriously in society, it actually led to better behavior from those in power, because they believed they were going to answer to God for how they used their station. I don't think there's a single "Christian" politician in office today who *really* believes in hell.

Seeking justice in this life is the thing to aspire to with all our might, but it isn't actually the bottom line. When the Bible describes God saying "Vengeance is mine, I will repay," I don't interpret it as an order not to punish evildoers in this life. Rather, it means that even if righteous men fail to do so, God is going to finish the job.
