Conversely we have the quote in OP, which directly contradicts these, yet rather than showing any sort of change in character it instead comes from the same time period as most of them. What did Lincoln himself think? Who the fuck knows. He wasn't even consistent about sending the blacks somewhere else. He pretty much abandoned the entire idea before the civil war even ended.
