I agree that a knife is better in a situation where the dog latches on and you have to actually have to fight it to the death, but a large stick will often let you avoid that scenario entirely. It creates significant distance between you and the animal, and swinging it in a wide arc is often intimidating enough to make a dog retreat entirely. When I was a kid, doing this made two full grown aggressive german shepherds change their minds about charging me.
