Archeological evidence of the sites of Sodom and Gomorrah suggests that they were inhabited for a very, very long time before they were destroyed. The talmud says it existed for only 50 years, but I don't believe a damned thing in the talmud, science says otherwise.
Anyways, this all goes to show that God is extremely *lenient*, actually. The God of the old testament was quite angry, of course, but what isn't accounted for are the gaps between God's wrath, which went on for centuries at times. So we can really consider him more merciful than angry, and he gave people more than enough opportunity to stop what they were doing.
In contrast, we haven't been this bad for even 50 years yet. A shorter time has passed than even the talmudic narrative says about Gomorrah, which is of course incredibly dubious because it comes from the mouths of jews.
God wants us to solve our own problems and he helps us to do it. He gave us a brain for thinking, eyes for seeing, hands for doing, and legs for moving. When we cannot do enough, that's when he gets involved directly
