No, he was fighting them actively.

I must be fair and admit that Floyd was NOT actively fighting against the cops in a manner that could risk escape BUT he DID struggle while the police attempted to keep him safely restrained for the safety of not just the police and public but also himself.

I ALSO must admit that I advocate for police to be trained at least as much in first responder as my college girlfriend who was a lifeguard. The Floyd police were completely ignorant and inept about positional asphyxiation and narcotic induced respiration depression. I want all police to be required to have yearly First Responder certification with also a demiannual retraining course, and possibly a swimming component to a yearly physical qualification for patrol units.

But this guy literally fought himself to exhaustion and death.

I can tell you right now that it is EXTREMELY difficult to restrain someone without injuring them. You always are inhibiting your own strength.

I experienced this on a Christmas day once. The University of Pittsburgh hosts a community meal which is free and open to the public, and at the time the way it was held was such an attraction that it required reservation of tickets prior to the final hours.

With this they also provided gifts to each ticket holder. Well, one derelict was very angered that the gift for adult men was a pair of socks.

First off, he is an adult and shouldn't even expect a gift from strangers - or anyone, if he is mature (which he is not). Second, these were NICE socks, probably a $10 pair of outdoorsman style socks, which I am sure were chosen for the homeless. These are the type of socks I almost exclusively have worn since I began commuting by bike after I first tried them as they wick away moisture quickly which keeps feet cool in the warmth and warm in the cold.

And he threw a tantrum like Veruca Salt.

Here is where it gets embarrassing. He was White. And behind him was a black man with his wife and young daughter. The black man was mature and politely asked him to not behave that way in front of children. Then the next thing I knew the black man punched the White immature man in the face and they began to tussle, but there is context to this. I rushed over and was about to thrust myself between them when 2 cops came rushing up the stairs. Well, I backed the fuck up and let them do their job.

And you know what? The black man immediately put his hands up and attempted to back away while the White man was still grabbing at him and attempting to swing punches.

As the cops were attempting to separate the two I told them that the black man threw the first punch. And this was true. But I soon learned why.

The White man threw a cup of hot coffee right at the black man. Which also splashed the little girl in the face. His daughter. Well, completely understandable.

So there were only 2 cops and one was guarding the black man - who had ceased all aggression immediately - while the other was trying restrain the still aggressive White man. That was not going well. So I decided to assist.

Just taking him to the ground without being damagingly violent was EXTREMELY difficult. If we made a wrong move ALL of us would SLAM to the ground. So we needed to use some Steven Seagal aikido techniques (which actually are good for minor control - I found out from this). No, seriously, it felt like I was in a Steven Seagal performance. But we finally got him to his knees, then into a nearly prone position.

Now, I say nearly since he was doing pushups to prevent getting completely on the ground in the Floyd position. We kept pleading him to stop pushing up and accept submission, but he was fighting the entire time. I warned me that I - since I was at the bow as it were - would yank his arms out from under him if necessary and that would result in his face slamming into the ground. I did not want that, especially on Christmas. We kept pleading but he kept fighting. Eventually he tired out and lowered to the floor, but we were unsuccessful in torquing his arms behind his back as we were still attempting to avoid injury.

Luckily that's when about4 or 6 more cops showed up, including one female. That last detail again has context.

So we FINALLY get this asshole to relent and get his hands into the small of his back, his elbows restrained, then his wrists cuffed with a double lock. Now we must stand him up. AGAIN, all without harming him. These were good cops and actually wanted to not hurt anyone simply to arrest them. He posed no immediate threat while being subdued. He was just an asshole about it.

Then he gets stood up. Oh my. Angelica Pickles couldn't make such a fuss. So he is standing now. He has two cops behind him, one on either side, one in front of him, and another behind the one in front to coordinate. Well, the one in front was the female, and he spat in her face then used the leverage of the officers holdig his elbows and arms to do a kangaroo kick when she backed away.

Anyway, MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
