To be fair, many European rivers were starting to look similar towards the end of the last century, thanks to decades of rapid industrialization. Many wetland ecosystems were on the verge of complete destruction, and contamination levels were so high in many places that swimming or fishing posed serious health risks.

Thankfully, people woke up and realized that this was a terrible development, and thanks to major cleanup and revitalization efforts, most large rivers are now cleaner than they were 50 years ago. Indian rivers, on the other hand, have been extremely dirty long before the country's industrialization, thanks to the common practices of defecating right in or along it, and dumping the ashes of cremated bodies into them.
