Consider even the more subtle point; he's saying men shouldn't do anything they don't enjoy.
Being a man (as opposed to a man-child) is *entirely* about doing things you don't want to do in exchange for what you really want. What about duty? What about sacrifice?
I don't go to my son's Little League game because it's great baseball, I go to show him that I support him. Family sticks together and wants each other to succeed. He's doing his best and that's what I'm there for.
Nick views legacy as being famous. Money power fame a name in a book that's what he sees as important and he wants it more than anything. Thats why he does what he does. Its not belief or integrity or moral standing. Its personally beneficial to his self perception of being important.
He will never know how fleeting and superficial that all becomes when you see your little one turn to you and say "I love you dad" and mean it, without any judgements or selfish motives. Just pure love and acceptance and joy.
White men didnt conquer the world for spices or slaves or fur. We did it for our children.
