The buildings still exist, as do most of the historic early Chicago skyscrapers. This particular picture is overlooking the Michigan Avenue Bridge. Look up the intersection of N. Michigan and E. Wacker avenues. If you use Google Earth with the 3D building feature turned on you can pretty much recreate it. As expected they're surrounded by several taller and more modern buildings.
