My wife and I do just this. We’ll get legally married once we’re done having children but for now the state pays for all the care she needs for preparation and child birth. Even though we home birth you still have to pay for a midwife (which is covered) and prenatal hospital visits if they are required by the state. Anything we deem unnecessary that is required by the state we can get a doctor’s note to excuse her.
