His humor was so understated, a lot of people didn't understand it. He was one of the best trolls in entertainment. No one really knows what he thought of Hitler and the "holocaust", but he brought both of them up at every opportunity he thought it would make someone uncomfortable. On his first talk show, he mentioned the crematorium chimney wasn't attached to anything and the shadow cast by the chimney in photos taken by US bombers. He knew what he was talking about.
His memoir "Based on a True Story" is one of the best pieces of absurdism I've ever read. I think he didn't believe his life was interesting enough to merit a book of memoirs, so he wrote it as if he was a hypodermic morphine user and dealer and sold morphine to everyone he knew. All for laughs, of course.
