Mankind has ALWAYS been this way.
If you want a high-trust society, you need to purge society of all elements that are not trustworthy. We did this in the middle ages by sentencing half of the adult population to be expelled from the towns and cities. But even then!
This whole thing sounds like a man-baby crying because he just realized that this world sucks and he has to act like a man just to survive. Like he was coddled as a child and no one ever told him about the true nature of human beings, or tried to convince him that you can just be happy-go-lucky and things will work out in the end.
He was probably raised without a dad. See, a real father would make sure that his son realized what society was really like and how he needed to act to create a safe environment to raise a family in.
I had "the talk" with every one of my kids as they leave my home, and it's not just explaining about blacks. It's explaining about life, how you have to live with your shields up all the time, and how people who seem trustworthy are the people you need to trust the least. How to trust-but-verify. How to not get screwed in the end.
