The ruins of Oybin Monastery have inspired artists for hundreds of years. The monastery was abandoned after the Protestant Reformation, then mostly destroyed by a lightning strike, but it became a symbol of romantic yearning for a better, more Christian time.

Caspar David Friedrich painted this piece, showing two monks remembering what was, or possibly, dreaming about what might be again.
