Really, that's not a lot at all. About an hour ago, I wrote 500 words in reply to a technical question on a forum, and that was just banter. It took maybe 20 minutes to write, 10 to edit out the "It's early and I'm stupid" stuff. I could easily do 10x that in a couple hours if I wanted to really get technical and in-depth and wasn't character limited where I was posting.
A good writer should able able to whip out a couple hundred words without any problem at all.
But also, that being said, $17.50 isn't terrible for a retail job, it's actually pretty decent (in some places.) Where I am, they probably pay that just to keep up with the other positions like it. However, are these people getting full-time work? No. Not at all.
I have had some family members work for the mart of walls over the years, and in rare cases (like around the Holidays) they would get some full-time hours, but in most cases it was very limited hours. That worked well for those people because they were in school, or simply looking for some extra income - but there was no chance they could go full-time in the summer or any other time except when conditions for the store demanded it.

That's 219 words. Where's my seventeen-fiddy?
