That was the norm and how it was done, for millenia, until just a few decades ago. Babysitters were exclusively neighbors, family, and family friends. They were all people who were well known by the family and could be trusted to take care of the kids. This new phenomenon is a corruption, of letting total strangers take care of our kids. It's irresponsible to the extreme.

And then people act surprised when their toddler drowns in the pool: "But it's government certified!"

Blood relatives are the only people that care about your kids, even friends are taking a chance (especially if they don't have kids themselves).
