Every country has to bid on oil to get it. A shortage in one region affects all other regions. This is not the case if you own the oil. Suddenly Venezuela is starting to make a lot of sense. US control over Venezuelan oil would get rid of the need for the Middle East. However, Venezuela's production is not efficient.
