Ukraine had been settled by many Germans who left Germany seeking freedom from religious persecution a century earlier. They hated the slavs for starving them to force them to give up their farms. They viewed the German army as liberating countrymen.

Nothing makes me hate my country or the jews more than learning about German behavior during and in the lead up to World War II.
