In flash photos, it is possible for light to reflect the back of your eye, which is red. Happens if you take a flash photo in the dark because your pupils will be very open in the dark.
Happens less nowadays because most cameras made now have a pre flash effect that causes the pupils to close up before the main flash happens.
Also, if only one eye is red in a photo, like seen here, that could be a sign of eye problems.
Light eyes are particularly prone to it. In half of my childhood photos which were taken with old school digital cameras I have red eyes. If the flash was on, it was without fail every single time, my eyes were red. Melanin is the factor, my eyes are pale silver, they have almost no melanin at all, so the light refracted off of them extremely easily. Even with modern cameras it happens on occasion. My darker eyed brother did not have red eyes as often in pictures.
