A durable average 1950s car cost about $2000 at the time, which is about $27,000 by today's inflation... however if we built that same car out of the same materials, it would cost $150,000 (yes, I'm aware of the cost of new regulations for safety and environment standards, but my point still counts).

Factor in the cost of mining and transporting cast iron because of the weight when compared with plastic and cast iron car parts become expensive.
