those generations that lived through the great depression all had family gardens until they died. some of the next generation did too (boomers). now, few young people even know the top 5 calorie plants for their climate zone let alone when to plant and how to grow them.
just sayin. might be worth spending 2.5hrs or so to read up on it and buy some seeds to experiment with in your back yard or in pots on patio.
This is exactly where I currently am. I'm focusing on corn and wheat for now. My goal is to use some for livestock feed and then mill the rest for cornmeal and flour. I've got a father and great, resourceful neighbors who are experienced at this stuff and help me learn.
