I've been immersed in family life with kids and infants for a decade. But that made me remember that when my wife and I were younger we were also largely insulated from other families. Move away from your parents. Go to work, go to the bar, go to your apartment, etc. You're an only child or maybe have one other sibling who is also childless. Friends who have kids fall out of the 20's hedonism scene, etc. So you barely see them around.
When we finally had kids "when it was right", my wife suddenly went from reluctantly wanting two, to wanting as many as she could have. We realized we should have gotten started a lot sooner. Still made out OK eventually but I'll pass that lesson on to my kids and help support them when they're ready.
