Whatever it is, Iran is of vital importance to China, and their military tech has really advanced recently.

Iran is a big nucleus of low cost, durable, and effective drone tech. That's their big specialization. Iran has been specializing in drones since the early 80s. It doesn't have the military power of china, obviously, but Iran has drone science down to a T. Chinese money and gear allows Iran to make more of their own drones, and China gets drone shit from Iran in return.
And china is able to refine the process, and build Iranian drone designs out of superior materials because china has greater access to them. It would be wise to assume that china sells or trades these back to Iran as well. Iranian drones are very good, on a design level, but Iran has no money, so they usually build their very good designs with dogshit material and it causes their drones to be detected very easily.

This is true. More than that, it has advanced *extremely* quickly. Even 15 years ago there was no question about whether the US is more powerful than China or not. Now? It is a legitimate area of debate, and they do this with 1/3 the military budget. The only areas they are decidedly inferior in today are in tank technology, carrier technology, and submarine technology. They are definitively superior in missile technology, surface combatant warship tech, and likely soon drone tech. Other areas they seem to be on par. This was all done in less than 50 years, and they know where they are lacking too. China already has plans for a CVN fleet and are actively building it, for instance.
